BIOGRAPHY

Known for her jaw-dropping high notes and commanding stage presence, soprano Krista Renée Pape is gaining acclaim for her “virtuoso and fiery” portrayals. She has been awarded prizes from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, Pasadena Vocal Competition, Orpheus Vocal Competition, Shreveport Singer of the Year, National Society of Arts and Letters, MIOpera Vocal Competition, Lewisville Lake Symphony Vocal Competition, as well as the top prizes in the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Performance in Voice Competition, San Antonio Tuesday Musical Club Young Artists Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition, Young Texas Artists Music Competition, and the Palm Springs Vocal Competition along with the audience choice award, as well as a Fielder Grant.

In 2025 she made her role and house debut singing the First Lady and covering Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Mississippi, and she went on to be the soloist in Kim Arnesen’s The Wound in the Water with Houston Masterworks Chorus. In the fall of 2024, she performed twice with Wichita Grand Opera, first as the First Wood Sprite in Rusalka, and then as the Sandman, Dew Fairy, and Gretel (cvr) in their production of Hänsel und Gretel. That summer, Pape made her live and recording debut with the Texas Music Festival as the soprano soloist in Bruckner’s Psalm 146 and was seen at Festival Napa Valley with Manetti Shrem Opera as Blonde in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio.

Pape completed a residency with Lyric Opera of Kansas City in 2023, where she performed Frasquita while covering Micaëla in Carmen, Annina while covering Violetta in La Traviata, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Mrs. Grady while covering Wendy in The Shining, and Woman 4 in Sondheim on Sondheim. While there, she also participated as Mom in the world premiere of Rachel Peters’ children’s opera, Sketchbook for Ollie, and as Wilhelmina in Listen, Wilhelmina!. In summer 2023, she returned to Opera North to reprise her role as Frasquita in Carmen and cover Julie Jordan in Carousel.


Her professional debut came in 2020 in her signature role of Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with Opera North. In the summer of 2019, she made her role debut as Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Opera in the Ozarks, and her virtual debut as Gilda in Rigoletto with MIOpera in 2021.

As a frequent recitalist, Pape has travelled all over the country sharing the beauty and love for art song. Upcoming recitals include STORYTELLING for the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs, as well a joint recital with all the NFMC Young Artists for the National Federation of Music Clubs National Conference

Ms. Pape graduated with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy (2020) from the University of Houston. There she performed numerous roles with the Moores Opera Center, including Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, and Kitty Packard in the regional premiere of Dinner at Eight

As a popular recording artist, Pape has recorded with the University of Houston, where she performed as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana, and Cunegonde in the Bernstein Centennial concert. Additionally, she has also recorded with Tyshawn Sorey and the Houston Chamber Choir, David T. Clydesdale and the Chapelwood Choir, and soon with the Texas Music Festival


Possessing a strong connection to contemporary music and libretti, Pape is constantly developing chamber and recital repertoire, and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, has produced her own season featuring works primarily by living composers. Other projects included a chamber music series titled Vibe with Us, a musical tribute to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, multiple jazz recordings, and a recital series. In the summer of 2022 she joined the Music Academy of the West Vocal Institute as a Fellow, premiering as a soloist in the Tom Cipullo project concert, as well as other chamber and art song work.  

Krista performs in Carmen as Frasquita.
